DATE: October 13, 2014

TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers
Patrick Klaers, City Administrator

FROM: Terry Maurer, Public Works Director

SUBJECT: Gateway Sign - Cleveland/CR D

Requested Action

Give staff direction to proceed with the installation of a 4 ½ foot high, 7 foot wide, internally lit
gateway sign at the northeast corner of Cleveland Avenue and County Road D. The cost to
manufacture and install the sign is $10,300.00. The additional cost would be to get a curb
poured around the sign similar to the two gateway signs.

Background/Discussion

As directed by the Council, staff has obtained a quote from Fourth Dimension for a Gateway
sign at the northeast corner of Cleveland and County Road D. As you are aware, this sign would
be placed in a small easement on the property located at the northeast corner of the intersection
adjacent to bituminous trails on each side. An exhibit is attached showing the easement location.
This location makes it impractical to light the sign from an external source as the light would
likely be damaged or at least covered by plowing operations. Therefore, the recommendation is
for an internally lighted sign.

Internally lighting the sign would require that it have a slightly different appearance from the two
existing signs, although it would be constructed of generally the same materials. The difference
is the area where the City logo and name appear would be made from green colored aluminum so
the logo and name can be cut out and the Plexiglas placed to allow the light to shine through.

Finally, the easement document restricts the sign height to 4 ½ feet and its length to 20 feet.
However, using the 4 ½ foot height and general sign shape the proportion that is recommended is
about 7.3 feet long.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS – 9A

MEMORANDUM
