ARDEN HILLS PLANNING COMMISSION—APRIL 4, 2001 7
Commissioner Sand stated that at building 1987, on the very east side, there was a trailer there
that had not moved, and he wanted to make sure it was not being used as permanent storage
facility. He also stated there was a mobile home in the parking lot. He asked Ms. Oertli to check
to make sure these were temporary facilities only.
Commissioner Sand asked how many screens would there be when there were two dumpsters
together. Ms. Oertli stated they would use one screen to enclose both dumpsters.
Commissioner Sand stated he wanted to see the dumpsters moved closer together so they could
not be seen. Ms. Oertli agreed.
Commissioner Erickson expressed concern that the dumpsters would still be seen from the road.
Ms. Chaput pointed out that as the landscaping grew, that would also aid in screening the
dumpsters.
Commissioner Erickson expressed concern that the fences would be hit by the trucks and would
not maintain their neat appearance.
Commissioner Erickson asked the owner look into screening the whole area, instead of
individual dumpsters.
Chair Baker closed the public hearing at 8:24 p.m.
Chair Baker concurred a more long-term solution would be desirable. He asked if these
proposals had been taken to the owners. Ms. Oertli replied the current requirements were to
screen each dumpster with cedar, and that was the reason this was being proposed. She stated
with respect to landscaping, once the trees grew bigger, that would aid in the screening, but this
was not a short-term solution.
Commissioner Zimmerman asked how Ms. Oertli felt about the proposal Commissioner Erickson
gave with respect to one fence along the whole loading dock area. Ms. Oertli replied
Commissioner Erickson's suggestion would work with the 4300 Round Lake Road property, but
probably not with the other properties.
Chair Baker suggested having staff works with the owner with respect to this issue to see if any
of Commissioner Erickson's suggestions would work, or if they could come up with a better
solution to this.
Commissioner Erickson suggested tabling this item to give the owner an opportunity to come
back with modifications that would better screen in the area, without having to screen in
individual dumpsters. Commissioner Galatowitsch agreed.
Chair Baker asked if this would be setting a precedent if they approved this. Ms. Chaput stated
this was specific to this development.
Commissioner Zimmerman commended Ms. Oertli for being proactive regarding this and stated
it may be economically cheaper to do it this way, instead of enclosing each individual dumpster.
