Read on for news of a new Arden Hills Ordinance affecting park gatherings: in recent years
police have been called to check on disturbances in public parks in the Village, and in a
couple of cases were greeted by flying beer cans. Consequently the Council recently passed
Ordinance #193 (not unanimously), effective June 10, 1976, prohibiting use of alcoholic and
intoxicating beverages in all public parks within Arden Hills. This means no spiked iced.
tea at -family picnics, nor can victors and losers in the neighborhood ballgames commemorate
on location with a sad or happy beer. Obviously it also means fewer problems for the Police
Department.as well as residents due to "drinking parties" - which have increased since Min-
neapolis and St. Paul passed similar ordinances prohibiting drinking in their parks. With
Mpls.-St. Paul parks off-limits, drinking gangs have moved to suburban area parks, and be-
cause of this, police feel, our own parks are used less for family gatherings and more for
large and roving drinking groups. Council's split vote on this Ordinance sums up general
mixed feelings. Pertinent to this.the Parks & Rec. Committee requested Council to run a
study of organizations using parks within the Village regarding their reaction to the Ord-
inance and has asked the Town Crier to advise residents and solicit your comments. Express
your views to your Councilmen, or call the Village Hall or Parks & Rec. Director, John Buck-
ley. (Village Hall Phone Number: 633-5676.)
Plans for the proposed development of -Arden Hills' Floral Park and Hazelnut Park accompany
this newsletter. Residents are encouraged to participate in their park's development by
sharing their ideas or suggestions at the Park and Rec. Comm. Meeting Tuesday, July 13,
8:00 P.M., Village Hall.
Let's hope the Arden Hills' Memorial Day Parade (also
commemorating our twenty-fifth birthday and the Bicenten-
nial year) sponsored by the Arden Hills Community Service
Organization will become an annual event! Although skies
were cloudy that morning, co -chairwomen Joan Grey and Ros-
ie Lemke put together a celebration that spread sunshine
O
along the route from Lake Johanna Elementary School to
W
Lake Johanna beach. There were fire engines, antique cars,
a "covered wagon", clowns, the pom-pom and Band-Aid Girls
C
from Presbyterian Homes (and their King and Queen resplen-
dent with crowns and scepters). Ronald McDonald was there;
RArden
Hills Mayor and Councilmen smiled and waved their
skimmer straw hats, looking around all the time for babies
I
to kiss.... See the photographs on the inside of the Crier_,
thanks to photographers Terry Meury, Rose Lemke, Joe Bender
and your Sec./Ed. (If you see something you'd like a copy
E
of contact Jan Hollenhorst, 633-1822). ,There were some
•
picnic-ers after the parade at Tony Schmidt Park, but not
•
enough. Maybe in future years The Annual Parade (are you
and your committee, Rosie and Joan, up to planning another
one?) will be followed by a Community -wide Annual Picnic..
