Published by the Ardeny Association
No. 124
"The lamps are going out all over Europe;
we shall not see them lit again in our life-
time."---- Edward,'Viscount Grey of
OFallodon (1862-1933)
Spoken August 4, 1914, from the windows of
%V the Foreign Office, London, as the lamplighters
were turning off the lights in St. James's
CNPark.
IL
Ramsey County, apparently in a budget move,
' has announced it is going to stop paying for
FA 19 street lights in Arden Hills. If we want
the light, we will have to pay for it ourselves.
' R . • • (It costs roughly $100/year/light.) Of the
• • • 19, the Public Safety Committee and the Council
e have agreed that two on County Road I can go
' (north of the Arsenal where there are no homes),
as can two along New Brighton Road (by the Church and at Hudson.) We are going
to try to sweet-talk Control Data into paying for the two at their entrance
on Lexington. As for the other 139 a study is being done on just what are
the reasons for a street light in the first place. The Assistant Clerk -Admin-
istrator is preparing a map showing all the street lights in Arden Hills, and
who is paying for each.
' This month's Town Crier has enclosed a brochure on the North Suburban
Area Crime Prevention Fund. In 1976, the City Council of Arden Hills passed
a resolution supporting the establishment of this crime fighting organization.
However, since Arden Hills does not financially support this fund, it should
be clearly understood that the Council is neither encouraging or discouraging
;your donations. That is completely up to you.
From our Building Inspector Larry Squires: A total of 207 Building Per-
mits were issued in 1978 with a total estimated valuation of $2592889000. Of
these permits, 134 were for new single-family dwellings, with an average value
of $729000. (The year before we issued 61 single-family permits with a $54,000
average.) In 19789 we also approved permits for 3 garages, 112 mobile homes,
' 3 fences, and 1 swimming pool. Also, 3 summer cabins were demolished on Lake
Johanna.
However, the big increase was in commercial development. Northwestern
National Bank, the additions in Bethel, Flaherty's addition, the Roseville
Bank, Minnesota Diversified Products, Eastside Beverage, Scholls, the Mounds
View High School addition, our own Public Works' Building addition, and Mutual
Service, all add up to a whopping $15 million. Love to see all that tax, base.
Nevertheless, the tax exempt property in Arden Hills is around 60% of the
total valuation. Of the tax exempt properties, the big ones are: the Arsenal,'
Bethell State and County properties, School District #6219 Presbyterian Homes,
Arden Hills, and Northwestern College.
