N
Guide to Giving
E
E
0
The Saint Paul Foundation and its statewide affiliate, Minnesota Community Foundation, represents the
vision and charitable interests of thousands of donors who have been able to fulfill their individual charitable
° goals and, at the same time, build charitable capital to meet the current and emerging needs of their
N
> communities.
0)
TYPES OF FUNDS
"' Most donors create their own funds within the Foundation. The following types of funds can be created to
serve the diverse interests of donors to a foundation.
DONOR ADVISED FUNDS — Donor advised funds allow the donor or others designated by the donor to
make recommendations to the Foundation regarding charitable grants from the fund. A donor's wishes are
always considered, but final determination on all grants is the responsibility of the directors of the
Foundation.
•
UNRESTRICTED FUNDS — Unrestricted funds are the most flexible and most responsive to changing
community needs. The donor leaves decisions on the charitable uses of the fund to the directors of the
Foundation. Unrestricted funds allow the Foundation to respond most readily to emergency situations and
Z O unanticipated needs.
Q
o FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDS —Field of interest funds support broad areas of charitable interest selected
Z by the donor at the time the fund is established. For example, areas of interest can include adult literacy,
children's needs or scholarships. The selection of specific grant recipients is left to the directors of the
,L Foundation.
J
a DESIGNATED FUNDS —Designated funds are established to benefit specific charitable organizations that
E— are named by the donor at the time the fund is established.
_Z
Q
V)
w
2
