SCHOOL AND LIFE
t was painful for Lucero Arellano to see her 4-year-old daughter
Estefany having trouble playing with other children. "She didn't
know English so it was difficult for her to integrate," she says.
Then Estefany Arellano Garcia began participating in Words
Work!, an initiative funded by Fhe Saint Paul Foundation that
combines an innovative Head Start classroom program with
literacy-focused home visits by multi-lingual instructors to children
ages 3 to 5. Children develop the early literacy skills needed to
be successful readers and learners when they enter school.
Involved in Words Work! for more than a year, Estefany now
speaks English, and looks forward to frequent library trips and
playing with other children in her neighborhood.
