4fAppendix A: Park Classification & Design Standards
The purpose of classifying parks in Arden Hills is to identify the components of the park
system and describe them according to:
1) what the typical uses are intended to be; and
2) which geographical area each park is likely to serve.
These service areas should be accessible to residential areas without major physical
barriers.
The park classification and standards are based on the National Classification System for
Parks, Open Space & Greenways. These National Standards are intended to guide
communities in the future development of a park system. They are intended to be used as
guidelines at a local level and to be taken into consideration with local community needs.
I. NEIGHBORHOOD PARK
Use
Neighborhood parks are the basic unit of the park system and serve as the
4t recreational and social focus of the neighborhood. They accommodate a wide
variety of age and user groups, including children and adults. They create a sense
of place by bringing together the unique character of the site with that of the
neighborhood.
Development
Neighborhood parks typically have a balance of active and passive park uses.
Active recreational facilities can be used for organized athletics, but should not be
over scheduled as to become a nuisance to the neighborhood.
Site Criteria
Size: 5-30 acres
Service Area: 1/4 to 1/2 mile distance and uninterrupted by non-
residential roads and other physical barriers.
Typical Elements:
o play equipment o open field area
o athletic fields o benches
4 o trails o landscaping
City of Arden Hills Comprehensive Plan - 1998 Page 50
Parks and Trails
