If
I. OVERVIEW
Arden Hills has 15 parks within its borders totaling approximately 350 acres. The
City is well served by its neighborhood park system, with parks and open space
within 1/4 - 1/2 mile of most residences. Residents are also served by Tony
Schmidt Lake Johanna County Park, which is owned and operated by Ramsey
County.
Connections between parks and community destinations are incomplete in several
areas of the community. The City is divided by several major highways and
freeways, which present significant barriers and/or safety issues for pedestrians
and bicyclists.
Trail use has soared for all ages, with walking, jogging, biking and in -line skating
all gaining popularity as forms of exercise and recreation. As highlighted by the
1996 Quality of Life Survey, linkages within and through the City are important
to citizens. Connecting trails among areas of the community will provide the
ability to walk, bike and skate both recreationally and to destinations within the
City and surrounding areas.
Future facilities for the TCAAP area involve: a joint athletic facility for Arden
Hills and the surrounding communities, a community park, a nature preserve, and
four (4) neighborhood parks. The TCAAP area will be connected by a series of
trails to the existing developed area south of Highway 96 as it develops.
II. GOALS AND POLICIES
Arden Hills has worked hard to provide a strong system of park and trail facilities.
The following goals build on past efforts and work toward strengthening
recreation facilities and systems. The goals relate to parks and trails south of
Highway 96 and the TCAAP areas.
Overall Goal: Maintain and Expand Park and Trail Facilities
1. Continue to expand the trail system to connect neighborhoods to parks, trails
and other area destinations according to defined priorities.
2. Continue to provide a balance of active and passive recreational areas, while
emphasizing the natural beauty of the area.
3. Connect neighborhoods to the City's trail system by constructing pedestrian
crossings that eliminate or avoid conflicts with major transportation barriers.
City of Arden Hills Comprehensive Plan - 1998 Page 40
Parks and Trails
