NEW BUSINESS-8D
,- i DEN HILLS
MEMORANDUM
DATE: May 22, 2017
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers
William S. Joynes, Sr. City Administrator
FROM: Sue Polka, Public Works Director/City Engineer
SUBJECT: 0.5 MG Water Tower Rehabilitation Project
Final Plans/Ordering Advertisement for Bids
Requested Action
Adopt Resolution 2017-013 Approving Plans and Specifications and Ordering Advertisement for
Bids for the 0.5 MG Water Tower Rehabilitation Project
Background/Discussion
The 2017-2021 Capital Improvement Plan identifies a project to repair and repaint the City's 0.5
MG water tower located at Cummings Park(Attachment A). The tower last underwent repairs in
2001. In 2012 the tower was inspected by Kollmer Consultants at which time it was
recommended that repairs and repainting be completed within 1 to 2 years. A copy of the report
is available at City Hall. The south water tower was rehabilitated in 2013 at a cost of$783,250.
Based on recent bids and the scope of work for the tower, the current engineer's estimate
(construction only) for the north tower work is $691,737. The work includes interior structural
repairs, interior coating replacement (including lead based paint removal), exterior structural
repairs and exterior coating.
The preparation of plans and specifications the project was authorized by on April 10, 2017. The
bid documents are now complete and ready for bidding. Adoption of the resolution listed above
will authorize the next step for the project: approval of the plans and ordering the advertisement
for bids. Bids will be received on June 20th. Following the bid opening, the results will
presented to the Council on June 26t' to consider awarding the construction contract.
The bid documents also includes a bid alternate to complete the work in 2018. The City may see
a cost savings as contractors could plan to start the project at the beginning of the next
construction season. Staff recommends adoption of Resolution 2017-013.
Attachments
Attachment A: Resolution 2017-013
Attachment B: Advertisement for Bids
