Bac kyard Chic kens Survey
24 / 81
are in a much more urban area than Arden Hills , where we hav e more s pac e to keep birds.
Some friends gave us a chicken coop kit for our wedding (5 y ears ago!) and we would love to
be able to s et it up in our large, one acre lot. I know our neighbors would be supportive (we'v e
dis c us sed the city 's ban on chickens before and hoped it would be lifted), and I c ould see it
bringing the neighborhood c los er together. I imagine people without first or s ec ond hand
knowledge of urban chickens may hav e negative views of them, but I am thankful the c ity is
asking for feedbac k .
113 I have not pers onally k ept chic kens, but I hav e both known those that have kept c hick ens and
have lived near those that kept c hick ens in an urban area. The noise is abs olutely the first
thing that bot hered me - chickens are loud, and hav e no regard for whet her or not the humans
living within earshot of them work late, or work ov ernights, or just don't want to lis ten to
chic k ens. Additionally, in my ex perience, many folk s that are interest ed in keeping c hickens
are blinded by t he excitement of having s aid c hic k ens and do not tak e the time to properly
prepare t heir property or understand everything that having c hick ens entails .
10/17/2020 11:31 AM
114 They are incredibly loud, and will wak e up neighbors and their dogs . They are filt hy c reatures
and cannot be k ept anywhere near property lines without detritus spreading int o neighbor's
yards. They should not be allowed.
10/17/2020 11:28 AM
115 I had an old neighbor with hens. They don't make much nois e and you hardly know they are
there. It was fun to wat ch them in the bac k yard.
10/17/2020 10:54 AM
116 the person I knew was not v ery res ponsible maintaining a c los ed spac e. Chickens were
wondering all ov er and would become a t hreat to mot orist . Polic e and city admininstrators were
spending a lot of time with owner to k eep his chic kens penned up.
10/17/2020 10:50 AM
117 They weren't a bother at all. Zero problem. This was in NE mpls with s mall, clos e lots . Was fun
for the kids and neighbors actually. Good c onnection to agriculture.
10/17/2020 9:56 AM
118 Great to have the eggs . It was a vis ual mes s.10/17/2020 9:16 AM
119 Sev eral ac quaintances hav e chickens . They are entertaining and ornamental, and I have
enjoy ed the opportunity to have fres h eggs .
10/17/2020 1:09 AM
120 Enjoy s eeing them nex t door 10/16/2020 10:44 PM
121 Hav ing s mall number of chic kens(6 or les s ) doesnt c ause alot of is s ues. the chic k ens s eem to
be part of the backyard nature. Kids really k now where their food comes from.
10/16/2020 10:29 PM
122 Hav e only heard pos itive things : food quality, k ids enjoy ment/learning, etc 10/16/2020 9:28 PM
123 We had c hickens in Roseville and it was a wonderful ex perience for us and our neighbors as
we gave eggs away and it fostered a sense of community among us.
10/16/2020 9:27 PM
124 A friend from a neighboring city kept c hickens and it did not s eem intrus ive to her neighbors
and it was a great learning ex perience for her c hildrens .
10/16/2020 8:54 PM
125 It was a great learning ex perience f or children to learn about how t o rais e baby c hick s .10/16/2020 7:00 PM
126 Plus s ide is t hat they're easy to care for and a lot of fun. They look like moving lawn
ornaments. Downs ide is that predators will find them and inex perienc ed, low c ommitment
chic k en k eepers are likely t o give up.
10/16/2020 6:58 PM
127 Pos itive, they are allowed in st anthony 10/16/2020 6:34 PM
128 Great food source and good learning ex perience for everyone inv olved 10/16/2020 5:59 PM
129 Friends of ours enjoyed keeping c hick ens in a city, but had a larger propert y and s o was not a
nuis ance to anyone.
10/16/2020 5:25 PM
130 we have friends who keep chic kens and they hav e had pos itive experiences 10/16/2020 5:03 PM
131 They seem quiet and this family's kids loved the c hickens . They didn't hav e a roost er. Als o,
the family had a smaller breed of c hicken.
10/16/2020 5:01 PM
132 It is an excellent learning ex perience for all who are involv ed to learn about animals and where
our food comes from
10/16/2020 3:23 PM
133 We k now someone who keeps t hese. The roster c rows ev ery morning loud and clear, it is
mes sy and the surrounding soil is contaminated. We don't believ e their killings, for food,
10/16/2020 2:57 PM
