• B . Middle Schools Previously, all programs were run by the School Dis- trict . With the cuts being made, programs are being eliminated. The surrounding Parks & Recreation De- partments have been approached by the District #621 Principals to discuss future programming options . The Principals see an increased need to offer pro- grams immediately after school to students who other- wise go home to an empty house. We will be meeting with them in the future to discuss possible programs. Some ideas I have include: Dramatics, Drawing, Magic, Cooking, Woodworking, Karate. The residents of Arden Hills attend Chippewa Middle School . Pro- grams would be a joint effort of Shoreview and Arden Hills Recreation Departments. Some supplementary funding may be available through the School District. II. Special Event Programming One of the major trends in the recreation field today is in offering an increased number of special events. These types of activities range from holiday craft classes to field trips on school days off. A. Holiday_ Classes • I plan to offer a special event class corresponding to all major holidays. Some examples would include: Halloween Cookies, Valentines Day Ceramics, Christ- mas Crafts & Saturday with Santa . These types of classes are very popular in other cities and have filled up quickly when I have offered them in Arden Hills. The residents want these programs and they are a good public relations tool . The drawback to many special events is the fact that they are very expensive to run. Programs such as a "Saturday with Santa" requires some type of supplementary funding. Alternative sources are being researched. B . Vacation Events I did offer a Skate/Swim activity on February 21st during Winter Break. The activities took place at the Shoreview Ice Arena and Shoreview Community Ctr. There were 44 children who participated and a good time was had by all . I plan to offer more one-day event/trips when children have vacation from school . Possibilities include both Cross Country and Downhill ski trips, swimming, skating and bowling events . III. Facilities Barrier .My biggest problem in programming continues to be the lack of facilities. The summer months are not as much of • a problem since the parks in Arden Hills are adequate fox- the types of programs I have run so far. However, I con- tinue to run into barriers whenever I plan to offer classes the remaining 9 months of the year.
