Establishing Common Language/Standards for Trails <br /> Greg Pates did an excellent job defining trails/bikeways terms for the <br /> group. The definitions came from Minnesota statutes, and the AASHTO Guide <br /> For Development of New Bicycle Facilities-1981 (copies were distributed) . He <br /> was careful to emphasize that distinctions between the various trail types are <br /> anything but clearcut. There is a lot of overlap. He did very clearly show <br /> what the various trail types should look like in various settings. Some of <br /> the key comments/definitions are given below: <br /> ** Bicycle-- is defined as a 'vehicle' . It has all the rights and priveleges <br /> of vehicles. <br /> ** Off Road Bike Path--should be at least 5 ft. wide if one-way and at least <br /> 10 ft. wide if two way, with at least 2 feet of grading on each side and <br /> relatively free of intrusions by intersections or driveways. It works best <br /> as an "exclusive corridor" . Along roadways they are defined as a paved (or <br /> cement) area between the curb and the adjacent property lines and clearly <br /> separated from the roadway. They are intended for the exclusive or <br /> preferential use by bicyclists. <br /> ** Sidewalks-- Along roadways they are defined as a paved (or cement) area <br /> between the curb and the adjacent property lines and clearly separated from <br /> the roadway--- intended for the exclusive or preferential use by pedestrians. <br /> [The distinction between off-road bike paths and sidewalks is thus one of <br /> ended use, rather than design. ] <br /> -- way--typically a paved and <br /> * Bike Lanes Bikeways that are part of a road way ypi y <br /> striped zone adjacent to it. <br />
