The East Metro Chamber of Commerce issued an action alert warning that
Mississippi River development would be limited by the plan and called on
members to rally to protect commercial interests along the river. The Chamber's
interests may not be consistent with those of park lovers. Developers will have
an impact on the plan. The question is, will parks people have as clear and strong
a voice? If you would like to have input into this process or want to receive a
newsletter about the progress of the plan, Contact the National Park Service at
290-4160.
rees need a hand...
yours
-ee sale returns
Membership
The Friends of Parks and Trails
in St Paul and Ramsey County
1621 Beechwood Avenue
St. Paul, MN 55116
Sun scald is deadly for many young, thin barked trees. Repeated freeze/thaw
cycles in spring cause bark to split and peal. Tree wrap is ineffective in preventing this
type of damage although it can protect against rodents. The best protection is to shade
the trunk to prevent excess heating. Cloth fastened to stakes a few inches from the trunk
allows air to circulate, keeping the tree cool. If you also use tree wrap, remove it in the
spring. Trees need protection until they are eight or ten years old and have sturdy,
furrowed bark.
Thousands of healthy, bare root trees were purchased at the 1992 Friends
tree sale. Ourfriends liked what theybought and the income from the sale helped
us balance our modest budget. We declared it a preat success and are planning
an expanded sale next spring. We plan to sell Spring Snow, Red Splendor and
Weeping crab, Little Leaf Linden, Northwood Maple, Colorado and Black Hills
Spruce, Honey Locus, Japanese Tree Lilac, and two shrubs, Amur Maple and
Miss Kim Lilac. Begin planning your spring planting now with the tree sale in
mind.
Not a member yet? Really? Be a Friend. Join today. Memberships from
$20 to the Ross Perot level.
