PROGRAM PLAN In planning for future recreation programs, I am placing an emphasis on accommodating working parents. Thus, if possible, • programs will be offered in the evening or weekends when parents are able' to bring their children. Afterschool programs will continue at Valentine Hills Elementary and Island Lake. These programs are one-two hours in length. Expanded Programming will continue in these areas: Vacation Day Trips/Events when kids are off school. Holiday Classes; craft & cooking Tennis - with more courts at Mounds View High School we can run additional lessons and also offer tournaments. Safety Camp - 3 days rather than 2 Gymnastics-work with Turner's Gymnastics to offer more levels from certified instructors. Possible New Programs Breakfast with Santa Soccer and T-Ball - Instructional Mini-camps in the Spring. Hockey, Basketball, Wrestling - not to compete with the associations, but to provide a non-competitive opportunity for those who don't participate in the youth association, but want to learn the rules and skills of the sport. An emphasis will also be placed on providing equal opportunities . for girl's athletics. 1992 was the first year for organized fastpitch Softball in the Mounds View School District. The Parks and Recreation Departments took the responsibility of getting the program going. In 1993 , the parents plan to organize into an association. I have been working with them and will continue to do SO. I want to make sure the program is a quality one and that everyone has a chance to participate. They will continue to use the Mounds View High School fields which we maintain during the summer months. Facilities or lack thereof, continue to be the biggest programming obstacle. The use of the Army Reserve Center has provided indoor classroom and cafeteria space 3 evenings a week. There is still a need for a community type of room on weekends and also Monday-Friday during the daytime hours. If we had access to a Community Room, programs could be offered at the facility on a vacation day or part of a day. It would also be possible to run programs for pre-school aged children during the day. Our other big need at this time is additional softball fields. Demands for fields continue to increase. The addition of 3 or 4 adult fenced fields would give our existing youth programs the quality fields they need and deserve. The addition of adult fields that are fenced can bring in additional revenue by expanding our program and running tournaments. • Your comments and suggestions on programming possibilities are always welcomed.
