Arden Hills Park and Recreation Committee Meeting
December 18,2001 2
• PARK AND RECREATION UPDATES
Mr. Moore provided a Park and Recreation update to the Committee. He stated that they have
received three applications from individuals interested in joining the Committee next year. He
stated that he would submit the applications to the City Council at the Jan 14th meeting. He
stated that the ice rinks are not up and explained that they need three consecutive days of hard
frost plus ten cold days in order to have a skatable rink. He stated that the ground is not frozen
yet noting that a park truck, while doing park maintenance, sunk in the mud due to the extremely
wet fields.
Recreation Update- Michelle Olson
Ms. Olson provided a recreation update to the Committee. She stated that the clinic, scheduled
for over the holidays, is not going to work. She explained that it would be too difficult to do the
clinic indoors and that it has been canceled. She stated that the ice skating lessons could be
delayed a week due to the fact that the rinks are not ready. She stated that they are hoping to
have them up by the first week in January. She stated that all rinks are staffed, attendants are in
place and ready. She stated that they are still working on covering all the shifts. She referenced
the budget decisions made the previous evening and stated that she had decided, in order to save
money, she would produce the Recreation Guide in house in addition to relying on a combination
of flyers and press releases. She stated that the in house version would be a scaled down version
but just as effective and that it would save the City considerable money. She stated that support
staff is available and that it would help the lines of communication. She stated that they are very
capable of producing a guide similar to what is presently available. She stated that Mr. Moore
would be taking over for her while she is on vacation for two weeks in Hawaii.
Chair Messerly noted that the outdoor ice-skating didn't sound too promising. Ms. Olson
explained that if the weather continues like this beyond the second week of January it might not
be useful to open the rinks. She further explained that it takes more than a couple of cold days to
keep the rinks in good skating condition. She stated that after February the weather can be very
unpredictable, which is the reason why they usually start to close shop in that time frame.
Chair Messerly clarified that the Rink Attendants are aware that they are behind schedule with
the rinks and that it is possible they might extend the open hours.
PARK COMPREHENSIVE PLAN DISCUSSION
Mr. Ingraham provided a review of the changes in the draft document and asked for feedback
from the Committee.
Committee Member Crassweller suggested reviewing what was heard tonight during the open
house and then discuss the changes.
• Mr. Ingraham reviewed the cover options and explained that any digital photograph could be
