2.1&01
13. C. Mitigation Considerations
The wetlands in this area are utilized by the Blanding's turtle, and these turtles are
known to travel across County Road I within the project area. To minimize impacts to
these turtles, a wildlife tunnel is proposed to allow for turtle migration between the Twin
Cities Army Ammunitions Plant located south of CR I and nesting areas located to the
north and northwest of the proposed project. The tunnel will allow the turtles to travel
beneath the road rather than across the road as they do under existing conditions. The
tunnel is proposed to be located at a low point in the topography at which the turtles are
likely to travel under existing conditions. Fencing is proposed at specific locations to
direct the turtles towards the tunnel in order to increase the likelihood that the turtles will
utilize the tunnel. The proposed tunnel is a minimum 36" equivalent concrete arch pipe.
This type of pipe has a flat base that will be more conducive to turtle movement than a
rounded or ridged pipe. Overall, the size, type, shape, and location of the tunnel has
been designed to accommodate turtle migration that is known to occur in the project
area.
•
9
