Arden Hills Parks, Trails and Recreation Committee Meeting Minutes 3
June 11, 2002
• Committee Member Crassweller re-stated that they should determine their priorities first before
they decide on the individual projects and the amounts to spend on them. He further stated that
they need to address the more useable items first noting Ingerson Park and the Disk Golf Course.
He stated that, based on what would be more useable, that he would prefer the Disk Golf versus
the sign.
Committee Member Garretson asked if they would need to do the signs all at once. Chair
Straumann stated no. Committee Member Garretson stated that she had taken a bike tour of the
parks noting that many do not have signs. She stated that without signs it does make it difficult to
find and locate the parks and trails. She explained that the smaller trails are not marked at all and
agreed that they do need some signage. She stated that she is not sure if the signs should be done
all at once or over a period of time.
Mr. Moore referenced the sign samples stating that Derek Hannes developed the City logo and
did the work for the 50'h logo as well. He stated that Mr. Hannes visited seven or eight cities and
with his analysis came up with this design. He stated that the Mayor has asked for a tour of the
parks and that the Mayor has also commented on all the good work the Committee has done.
Committee Member Crassweller acknowledged that Mr. Moore made a good point noting that
they, as a Committee, should consider the Council's interests. He stated that he is willing to go
forward with the signage. He acknowledged that many in the Community do not know where all
• of the parks in Arden Hills are located other than what is in their immediate neighborhood. He
stated that residents have expressed concerns regarding increased usage and traffic as they begin
to upgrade the park areas and stated that it is important to consider the concerns of the
Community as they move forward.
Committee Member Henry clarified that there are many items that contribute to crime levels and
usage.
Committee Member Thompson expressed her agreement stating that she does not want to be
overly conservative in what they decide.
Committee Member Henry suggested including a contact number on the signs for residents with
questions or feedback. He stated that this would encourage residents to provide feedback to the
City. Mr. Moore stated that he would present this idea to Mr. Haines and let him determine how
to work it into the design.
Chair Straumann asked for clarification of the number of signs for each trail or park and asked
the Committee for a motion. Mr. Moore clarified the type of signage that is being considered
stating that he can provide further information for Committee review.
Chair Straumann suggested that they determine a recommendation that includes the number of
signs adding that it would be good to have the numbers available for the next Council Work
Session. He stated that this would provide them with an idea or rough estimate for cost purposes.
