• Minutes of Regular Parks and Recreation Committee Meeting
Village of Arden Hills
February 25, 1986
Village Hall
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 7:35 p. m. by Chairman Sand.
Roll Call
Present: D. Sand, K. Enrooth, D. Messerly, J. Mishek, A.
Montgomery, T. Mulcahy, J. Otto, M. Peterson
Absent: A. Anderson, G. Dreyling, M. Gillies, K.
Rauenhorst
Also Present: Mayor Robert Woodburn, Parks Director J. T.
Buckley, Craig Gallop, Sports Technology
Approval of Minutes
Motion was made by Messerly, seconded by Mulcahy, that the
minutes of January 28 be approved as submitted. Motion carried
unanimously.
Hockey Lighting Presentation
Mr. Gallop explained that his firm, Sports Technology, is the
area representative for the national lighting firm, Musco
Lighting, Inc. Unlike most lighting firms, this company not
• only sells the lighting equipment, they design, engineer, and
install all lighting sold, specializing in athletic field
lighting.
Most athletic fields are constructed in areas where the effect
of the lighting installed on the surrounding area must be
carefully considered. He stated that, in most installations,
"spilled light" or perceived light at a distance of 200 feet or
more from a lighted field would not exceed the amount of light
given off by a full moon.
Asked methods used to achieve minimum "spillage" of light, he
stated that he normally recommends using three poles. His firm
has found that mounting lights on higher poles (50 foot as
opposed to 30 foot ) makes it possible to better control
spillage, since fixture can be beamed more directly onto the
playing field. At the Cummings Park site, he probably would
recommend that two of the poles face the industrial area. Type
of lighting used can affect spillage. . . metal halide (presently
used in all Arden Hills' lighted rink at Hazelnut) has been
most effective.
Mr. Gallop offered, at no obligation to the Village, to visit
the Cummings Park proposed hockey rink site, and develop a
lighting plan for it. Buckley will set up an appointment with
Mr. Gallop to do this, and will notify all Committee members so
• they can join them as they tour the Cummings site.
Committee then concurred to invite the Cummings Park area
residents to the March 25 meeting of the Parks and Recreation
