Minutes of Parks and Recreation Committee Meeting, March 20
Page 3
Joint Parks Committee Meeting Report
Buckley, Sand, Peterson and Gillies attended this meeting, held
February 11, and sponsored by the New Brighton Parks and
Recreation Committee. Those attending felt it informative and
worthwhile; it is planned that similar meetings will be held on
a regular basis.
Funding alternatives, use of community volunteers, ways to
combat increasing park vandalism, and ways of cooperating in
program and maintenance activities were discussed.
Winter Program Report
Buckley reported rinks will be closing at the end of this week.
Use of rinks for recreational skating and organized broomball
and hockey was higher this year than last; felt "we had a very
good season".
Tree City, USA
Arden Hills has been declared a "Tree City USA". Formal
presentation of the award will be made by State officials
during Arbor Day activities.
Miscellaneous/New Business
Committee discussed long range financing briefly. Sand asked
if there were a way to estimate future income from pull tab
operation at Blue Fox. Committee discussed setting up a
Foundation, which could schedule fund raising activities, or
explore possibility of its own pull tab operation.
Sand reported an article in The Bulletin indicates Mounds View
High School booster clubs are soliciting funds for lighting of
the athletic field; asked if it would be appropriate for the
Parks and Recreation Committee to recommend a donation for
this. Buckley stated he did not feel it would be; currently
the Parks Department is given some use of the fields there; he
feels that if they are lighted, it is probable that any use of
the fields by Arden Hills will be discontinued.
Crepeau Nature Preserve
It was moved by Messerly, seconded by Otto, that no work be
done, such as mowing, installation of park benches, etc in
Crepeau Nature Preserve without the approval of the Parks
Committee.
Messerly explained that his subcommittee will be meeting
shortly and be making a report at the next meeting of this
committee. Buckley felt the corridor bordering Benton Way may
have to be mowed, since it is so visible; otherwise, the motion
is acceptable to him. Messerly stated he would mow the rest of
the trail personnally if it needs it.
Adlournment
The meeting was adjourned at 9:35 p. m.
