Outdoor Recreational Facilities Needed
The interest and growth in participation in youth and adult softball and soccer
has steadily increased to the point that there is a real need for additional
softball and soccer fields.
Outdoor space is needed to develop an athletic complex for four regulation-size
softball fields and two regulation-size soccer fields, with adequate parking
space.
Cost of developing an athletic complex would be from $300,000 to $500,000. The
cost would depend on site grading, cost of sewer and water, construction of
athletic fields, parking, concession area.
Potentiality of Facilities
Softball - In 1987 80 adult softball teams played in Arden Hills Parks and
Recreation-sponsored leagues. In addition, 20 Control Data Corporation
Men's teams, 2 Church teams, and 3 business teams also used Arden Hills'
fields. A softball complex would relieve the pressure of scheduling
softball games at neighborhood parks.
Soccer - Soccer is the fastest growing sport for both youth and adults.
This past year over 1,800 boys and girls participated in soccer programs
sponsored by the North Suburban Soccer Association, Arden Hills Soccer
Club, and Arden Hills Parks Department. There are also 8 to 10 adult
teams. There is presently a real shortage of soccer fields. The
increasing interest in the sport will continue to compound this shortage in
facilities.
Potential Income from Gvm and Multi-Purpose Room
The peak months are September 15 to May 15 (36 weeks). The slower months
are May 15 to September 15 (20 weeks). Peak hours are Monday through
Friday, from 4:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. (7 hours daily). The slower hours are
8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (8 hours daily). Potential income then would be:
Peak months
Peak hours = 35 hours/week for 36 weeks = 1,260 hours ($8/hour) _ $10,080
Slow hours = 40 hours/week for 36 weeks - 1,440 hours ($4/hour) = 5, 760
Slow months
Peak hours = 35 hours/week for 20 weeks = 700 hours ($4/hour) _ $ 2,800
$15,840
Maintenance Expense
Mounds View School District experienced a maintenance expense of .56 to .85 per
square foot this past year. The Mounds View High gym maintenance cost was .56
per hour; Irondate High gym .85 per hour.
Using these figures the estimated cost of maintaining a gym space of 11,000
square feet would be $6,050 to $9,350 per year.
•
