Brooklyn Park
CommunityActivity
enter
Groundbreaking for the Brooklyn Park Community Activity Center began October .
18, 1982. A community-wide grand- opening celebration was held on October 30, 1983.
In addition to an indoor ice arena, the center contains racquetball courts,
kitchen facilities, a preschool nursery area, conference room, and a large conununity
meeting room. Included in the indoor ice facility is seating for approximately
1,000 spectators, four team rooms, and a large concession area.
The building incorporates energy saving features such as berming, reclaiming
heat from the refrigeration system, automatic diming, and a demand control system.
A combination of burnished block, concrete, wood beams, and decking was utilized
for construction materials in the 53,000 square foot facility. Functional areas
within the facility are arranged to provide maximum control and supervision with
minimal staff in a central location. The supervisory center controls entrance to
all functional areas. Each program area can be independently controlled and sep-
arately entered by the users without conflicting with the other program users.
The Community Activity Center provides residents with many recreational program
opportunities such as racquetball lessons and rentals, preschool recreation programs,
exercise classes, tap and ballet classes, Jazzercise, skating lessons for children
and adults, as well as public open-skating sessions. Furthermore, the community
• meeting room is available on a rental basis for wedding receptions, seminiars,
conferences, major civic meetings, and other large group gatherings.
This newly constructed facility is the home arena for three area high schools:
Park Center, Osseo, and Brooklyn Center. In addition, the Brooklyn Park Youth Hockey
Association utilized a tremendous number of ice hours to accomodate its large youth
program. And, the Minneapolis Figures Skating Club, in cooperation with the Brooklyn
Park Recreation and Parks Department , formed a newly created figure skating branch
club in Brooklyn Park.
This building has been designed to provide tremendous recreational opportunities
to the general public. It is managed and operated by the City of Brooklyn Park
Recreation and Parks Department . Creative and continuous programming in all areas
of this facility are critically important in utilizing this building to its fullest
potential. .
In October of 1986, a National Guard Armory was added that includes a gymnasium,
kitchen area, pistol range, fitness area, classrooms, and army offices.
BROOKLYN PARK COMMUNITY ACTIVITY CENTER O 7
PARRS AND RECRF.ATION.DEPARTMENT t
CITY OF BROOKLYN PARK
5600 85TH AVE.
