spreads from other areas of the park), and in the late summer to prevent weeds like burdock and motherwort from
going to seed, as well as removing any young buckthorn that is found.
I intend to manage the maintenance for at least three years to assure that the plants are well -established and
the weeds are controlled.
What is Needed From the Public Works Department
• Establishing a Wholesale Account at Landscape Alternatives (if the city chooses to order from them)
• Ordering the Plants (late winter/early spring)
0 Communicating with me when arranging a time for pickup or delivery of the orders
• Ordering Seeds, if Option 3 is chosen (late summer/early fall)
• Herbicide/Backpack Sprayer
0 I'll need to spray once in the spring (when it's above 60oF) to kill unwanted vegetation and then go
back again a couple weeks later to spray anything I missed.
• Water
0 1 can provide a rain barrel for water storage on -site if city staff can fill it during summer/fall of 2023.
The plants should not need additional water after the first year, unless there are drought conditions.
Plant Sources
Looking through the DNR's list of native plant nurseries for central MN (plus some nurseries I saw at native plant
expos last summer) and their websites, I've broken down the list into four categories:
1. Bulk Seed Suppliers: MNLCorp, Prairie Moon, Prairie Restorations, and Shootingstar Nursery
2. Bulk Plug Suppliers: Dragonfly Gardens (32-pot flats for $60), Glacial Ridge Growers (18-pot flats for
$34.25), Landscape Alternatives (6-packs for $10.95), MNLCorp (36-plug flats for $89, but almost
exclusively prairie plants), and Prairie Restorations (6-packs for—$11.50, email for quote on bulk pricing)
3. Retail Suppliers: Blazingstar Gardens, BluPrairie, Ecoscapes, Morning Sky, and Sogn Valley Farms (all on
the order of —$4-8/plant)
4. Bulk Tree/Shrub Suppliers: MN State Forest Nursery (500 plant order minimum)
For this project, I'm focusing on using plugs to achieve faster results with a more tidy appearance. Of the suppliers in
that category, Dragonfly Gardens, Glacial Ridge Growers, and Landscape Alternatives had the lowest listed prices.
Dragonfly Gardens (in Amery, WI)
Size Price 3 Inch Pots: $7.00 each
2 Inch Pots (32 pots/flat) $3.00 each $60/Full Flat of Single Species $75/Mix and Match Full Flat
**Orders over 5 flats will have a $25 Pulling Fee. **25% Down Payment on orders over $500
Glacial Ridge Growers
** Grasses/Forbs - 18 pots/flat - $34.25/flat; Ferns —18 pots/flat - $49.95
** Wholesale orders must include an 8-flat minimum. Less than 8 flats per order will be subject to an upcharge.
Orders that are delivered before June 1st must be full flats of one variety per flat. Orders that are delivered after June
1st may be mixed variety flats (depending upon availability).
Landscape Alternatives
Wholesale: $10.95/6-pack shrubs: $10.75 / 1 gallon, $24.95 / 2 gallon
Cost Estimates
OPTION 1
My initial intention was to plant plugs somewhat densely to fill in somewhat quickly, particularly along the trail where it
would be most visible. For two species that would be planted in a large quantity, I suggest purchasing plugs from two
suppliers to increase the genetic diversity. Estimated Cost: $4,331 for 2,318 plugs + 18 small shrubs
12
