<br />ARDEN HILLS CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION MINUTES <br />SEPTEMBER 16, 2002 <br /> <br />2 <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Mr. Benke said the data came from analysis of nationwide tr-affic models and said <br />the results were not saying everyone will want to live in a mixed community, but <br />the mixed use center concept offers more choices for the work force. <br /> <br />Mayor Probst mentioned this was a very high level analysis. He said there may be <br />a high percentage of people in the workforce who may want to stay within the <br />coalition boundaries. <br /> <br />Planning Commissioner Clayton Zimmerman said every city wants to development <br />a fiscally productive city center. He said cities could provide incentives for people <br />to work in the city they live. <br /> <br />Council Member Rem asked what kind of jobs and the number of jobs that might <br />be available within the coalition boundary area. She said higher paying jobs may <br />not be found within the city. She said more choices for shopping and other <br />services seemed feasible, but Arden Hills currently has a population that is <br />traveling out of the city to work at higher-end jobs. <br /> <br />. Mr. Benke said that was certainly a policy question which the City Council must <br />address. He suggested high-end jobs, and dual working households may provide <br />more balance. <br /> <br />Mayor Probst said Arden Hills had a model in Guidant which provides many jobs <br />at higher earning levels. He suggested the policy makers think globally, and attract <br />businesses where the CEO's might live within five miles oftheir corporation. <br /> <br />Mr. Benke suggested the City consider several scenarios for growth, such as senior <br />housing and younger family homes, which are a good customer base for local <br />businesses. <br /> <br />Mayor Probst reminded the panel that the coalition area population was aging, and <br />that issue had huge implications to the City and other communities as a whole. He <br />applauded the wealth of data available to help make the decisions with special <br />issues, noting Arden Hills is noticeably in the center of the coalition area. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Commissioner Lemberg said, being one of the aging population group, he'd <br />suggest the City consider approving development of townhouses in more desirable <br />
