<br /> Minutes of Regular Parks and Recreation Committee Meeting <br /> - Page 2 <br /> - Concern was expressed about abuse of the trails by motorized vehicles if <br /> they were blacktopped. The subcommittee maintained that unimproved trails <br /> are more attractive to these than are blacktopped trails, and abuse would <br /> probably be less. <br /> Enrooth, noting that the results of the recent Parks survey indicated a <br /> high interest in trails by residents, stated that past efforts have been <br /> concentrated on development of the parks themselves; efforts should now <br /> properly be directed to providing a means to get to the parks and from park <br /> to park. <br /> Alan Montgomery felt that for safety reasons, further trail development <br /> should be pursued; wanted youngsters to be able to go to their neighborhood <br /> parks on marked trails. <br /> Jim Otto suggested Buckley contact neighboring villages who have <br /> blacktopped trails to ask their experience in maintenance time and costs. <br /> Sand felt strongly that emphasis should be placed on beautification of <br /> trails as well, and that benches and trash receptacles should be added <br /> along the trails. <br /> Buckley stated that trails are obviously important to the residents of the <br /> city; if they are accessible and easy to use, they are going to be used <br /> . more. <br /> He recommended budgeting an amount each year for trail improvement. <br /> 1987 Park Improvement Proposal - Trail Development <br /> Motion was made by Peterson, seconded by Enrooth, that Committee recommend to <br /> Council approval of the 1987 Park Development Proposal as outlined by Buckley, <br /> and further recommends that the $7,500 designated for trail development be <br /> utilized for asphalt on trails as outlined by the subcommittee. Motion carried <br /> unanimously. <br /> Publicity for Parks and Trails <br /> Committee discussed means to further publicize the location of the trails and <br /> parks in the city. Suggested were: <br /> - Walking tours of the trails, either as a group or with each park <br /> member leading a group from his neighborhood, were enthusiastically <br /> recommended. <br /> - Cable and Town Crier publicity of the blacktopping project and location <br /> of the trails, with request for donations, i.e. "buy a foot of <br /> blacktopping for $7.50". <br /> - Committee also proposed a "Fall Color Tour" of the parks. <br /> - Signs in the parks, identifying various wild flowers and foliage, and <br /> . mileage markers. <br />
