~\ ~,
\\\6
.
MEMORANDUM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: March 27. 1987
To: Arden Hills Council
From: Robert W. Raddatz, Public Works Supervisor
Re: Storm Sewer in Townhouses North
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a short section of storm sewer in the Townhouses North that is
being forced out of the ground by the frost. The sewer line is only three
to four feet deep in this location, and frost is very hard on a pipe that
is this shallow. The pipe is about 25 feet long going from one side of
the street to the other. The pipe is breaking away from the catch basins
on each side of the road. The pipe is composed of concrete sections of
five feet each.
I am recommending that we dig out the old pipe, then remove an extra two
feet of clay and replace with sand, lay the pipe back in, and fill the
trench with sand. We would use Class 5 on top of the sand to a depth of
. 6" to 8". A 4" asphalt base would then be added to that. If we follow
this procedure, we should eliminate frost heaving.
I will be back to the Council in April with a cost estimate on this.
.
