/~ 0
MEMORANDUM
. Date: June 25, 1987
To: Arden Hills Council
From: Robert W. Raddatz, Public Works Supervisor
---------------------------------------------------------------
Wood Chipper
We have. in our long range capital outlay plan, purchase of a
brush chipper in 1988. The plans were to purchase this jointly
with the Parks Department...total estimated cost $l2.000, each
department to pay $6,000.00.
Mr. Buckley and'I received a notice of sale of a used chipper.
We spent Some time checking the machine. and operating it. It
seems to be in excellent condition. The motor has 358 hours of
use (which translates to a little over 43 days of use at 8 hours
per day). The chipper runs smoothly. and reportedly does not
use any oil. I am confident it would serve the City for a good
number of years.
The gentleman who owns the chipper would like $4,600 for it.
John and I would like to recommend purchase of the machine. with
. an initial offer to him of $4.200. Landfills no longer will
accept any wood or brush. and it is becoming more difficult and
costly. both in terms of disposal costs and manpower. to dispose
of dead wood and brush. In the past. we have been fortunate
enough to borrow chippers from Shoreview and Roseville (usually
at times inconvenient to us). for about eight weeks per year.
As you know. I did not hire the summer personnel budgeted for
this year. The purchase price of the chipper could come from
this savings.
.
.
..--
