MEMORANDUM
. --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: September 28, 1987
To: Arden Hills Council
From: Robert W. Raddatz, Public Works Supervisor
Re: Purchase of Tractors
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last week (Wednesday) we received bids on tractors for the replacement of
the Case and Massey Ferguson tractors. The Case will be split four ways
(Sewer, Water, Streets, Parks). The Massey Ferguson will be a part of the
Parks equipment. The Case we are replacing is a 1972 model, 15 years
old. The Massey Ferguson is a 1974 model. 13 years old.
$40,000 is budgeted in the 1987 budget for this purpose, and $17,000 in
the 1988 budget.
We received four bids to replace the Massey Ferguson, two from Ford, and
two from John Deere. All units bid were comparable; all the units had to
take one exception from the specifications as written. the power reverse
shuttle shift. All other things were equal. The bids ranged from $23,195
down to $20,450. They were as follows:
. John Deere........... .$23,195.00
Ford................ ..$22,589.00
Ford................ ..$22,230.00
John Deere........... .$20,450.00
After looking at all four bids and studying the tractors, I propose we buy
the John Deere for $20,450.00., from Kortuem's Sales of Maple Plain.
All the dealers are reliable, and have parts and service available.
We received nine bids to replace the Case; two from John Deere, two from
Case, four from Ford, and one from Massey Ferguson. Of the nine, only two
met the specifications 1007.. The bids ranged from $25,500.00 to
$27,948.00. The bid of $25,500.00 was for a Massey Ferguson; the bid of
$27,948.00 was for a Case.
After studying all the bids, I would propose we purchase the Massey
Ferguson from Kortuem's Sales of Maple Plain.
Both units together would cost $45,950.00. We had $40,000 budgeted for
the Case, and $17,000 for the Massey Ferguson replacements. The Case
replacement is lower, since we are not buying a backhoe with it as was the
original plan. The Massey Ferguson replacement is higher than
anticipated, but both together are cheaper than the $57,000 budgeted.
. I would propose that we take the $40,000 budgeted in 1987, and take the
difference to purchase the two tractors out of the funds budgeted for
sealcoating this year. That would allow the $17,000 budgeted (for a
tractor) in 1988 to be used for other things in 1988, such as Pavement
Management.
