18
. (6) Debrief interviewers at the conclusion of data collection and obtain
feedback regarding the survey
B. Mail Survey Methods
To conduct the survey of residents using mail survey methods, an initial
questionnaire and cover letter will be sent by first-class mail with a pre-addressed,
postage-paid return enveiope to facilitate participation in the survey. We will work with
City of Arden Hills representatives to determine what letterhead and signatures will be
maximally effective.
Those residents who do not respond to the initial mailing will be sent a follow-up
reminder postcard. Those who still do not respond will be sent additional mail follow.up
reminders which will include another copy of the questionnaire. This will be followed by
extensive telephone callbacks using our professional interviewers and on-site
. centralized interviewing facilities.
The data collection techniques we propose to use to obtain high response rates
to the mail survey of Arden Hills residents are summarized below:
(1) First-class postage for initial and follow.up mailings and the use of
postage stamps instead of metered mail
(2) Inclusion of a self-addressed, postage. paid return envelope
(3) A separate cover letter for the initial mailing explaining the purpose of the
study
(4) A 'P,S." on the bottom of the cover letter for important reminders
(5) The assurance of confidentiality regarding responses
(6) Questionnaires that maximize the use of white space
(7) Carefully timed mail follow-up reminders that are creative
(8) A combination of mail and telephone follow-up procedures
.
