Public Hearing on Special Use Permit n. plaza bldg., sle. 220
for Roof Sign 5217 wayzala blvd.
B. Dimensional Variance minneapolis, mn 55416
612 544 7576
for Di ri?cti ona 1 Si gns
Applicant: Howard Johnson (McGuires Inn)
by Steve Kappler, General Manager
1201 West County Road E
Date: May 2, 1990
REQUEST:
McGuires Inn will be in a state of transition during the next few weeks
to the Howard Johnson of Arden Hills. Signs will be replaced or added
as follows:
1. The permanent north-facing sign on the roof will be replaced, first
by a temporary banner and then by a four-foot by 53-foot permanent
~ business sign, This sign exists under a permit issued in 1973.
The 1980 sign ordinance requires a special use permit for roof
signs and also requires that a lawfully existing sign that requires
a special use permit under the 1980 ordinance shall apply for a
special use permit within one year of adoption of the ordinance
(August 12, 1980). As such a permit was never pursued, the City is
taking this opportunity to officially consider the special use
permit.
2. Two new 13-square-foot permanent directional signs are proposed at
the front entry from County Road E. As these signs exceed the
dimensional requirements of the sign ordinance, a variance will be
required.
3. A new temporary banner will be placed on the east facade and then
will be replaced by a eight-foot by 58-foot permanent business
sign. As this sign conforms with all ordinance requirements, the
permit is handled administratively.
4. The existing pylon sign in the County Road C front yard area will
remain as it is--reading simply "McGuires." The identity
established over many years will remain for a transition period of
up to a year or more. It is nonconforming in terms of height and
setback but is allowed to remain as it is until the sign is moved
or modified (copy may be changed). No action is required.
~ The site has two street frontages and therefore is allowed to have three
business signs.
planning . landscape architecture
----
