The public works garage's mechanical systems are also in poor condition, and even though we jam as much inside as we can, a lot of our equipment has to sit outside, exposed to the weather. In fact, we wouldn't allow anyone in the city to clutter their property with the outside storage that we have. There is little doubt that the time has come to address these problems. We've been careful with expenditures through the years, and this isn't about to change. Function, not fancy, will be the key element of any new facilities we build. You'll see no exotic plants or oak offices in any building we might construct, just solid, efficient and well designed work spaces that will permit our employees to serve you in the best possible manner. The need is real and we must enlist your support. And yes, that means we need to talk about financing. Prudent investing through the years should yield the funds to construct a City Hall, but the public works building will require your approval of a bond issue. Our preliminary estimates suggest the need to borrow $3 million for 20 years, and the payments will add a mere $4.00 per month to the typical tax bill. Expect more details in the weeks to come, and in the meantime, please stop by City Hall and take a look around. We think you'll quickly agree that it is woefully inadequate, and hope to enlist your support ~ for this very necessary project.
