ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION – MARCH 27, 2024 8
Commissioner Williams noted an office building then could have a much larger sign even though
the exterior of the building would be the same because the square footage would include the bottom
level, second floor, third floor and so on.

Senior Planner Fransen stated that would primarily be the footprint square footage.

Commissioner Williams said he would like this to be clarified.

Senior Planner Fransen stated she would clarify that.

A discussion ensued about the process of calculating square footage.

Commissioner Brausen asked for clarification on striping lighting as now there is no striping
lighting allowed. He referenced the differences in his Holiday versus another Holiday location
and asked that there be clarification.

Senior Planner Fransen said she has made note of colored lighting.

Commissioner Williams asked if murals or art on walls falls under signage or not.

Senior Planner Fransen said this falls under graphic signage and noted some districts do not
permit graphic signage. She directed the members to look at the Table.

Commissioner Brausen asked if this was going to go to the City Council.

Commissioner Williams asked if there was anything about the distance the building’s sign is from
the road and could the sign be bigger if signage is further back from the road.

Senior Planner Fransen stated there are setbacks from property lines but not a specific setback
from the building and noted it was five feet.

Commissioner Gronquist said the requirements do not take the distance back from the road into
consideration and it is based on perimeters that are currently set.

Senior Planner Fransen said she has included these suggestions in her notes on potential next
steps. She indicated these amendments include adding the building footprint in order to clarify the
square footage and also clarifying the usage of colored lighting. She noted these signage
recommendations could be brought forward to the City Council at a future work session. She
thanked the EDC and asked if they would like to consider a motion for this item.

A motion to present this to the City Council was made by Commissioner Brausen and seconded
by Commissioner Subramanian. The motion carried unanimously.

4. COMMENTS AND REPORTS

A. Report from the City Council

None.
