.

Zoological Society of Minnesota

March 17, 1994

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;

The Zoological Society of Minnesota is a private non-profit
organization of Minnesota citizens dedicated to fostering an
appreciation for the animal world by promoting public interest and
education in zoology and related sciences. In particular, we are
interested in the protection and preservation of native flora and
fauna and the habitat and ecosystems upon which they depend for
survival.

The Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant (TCAAP) property in Arden
Hills represents the largest, contiguous, undeveloped portion of
wildlife habitat and open space remaining in Ramsey County. It
supports a diverse assemblage of natural cO:mJ\lunities - native
prairie remnants, wetlands, oak woods and grasslands. These natural
areas provide habitat for a variety of wildlife and plant species
many of which have already disappeared from most of the
metropolitan area. The continued presence of such natural
communities depends on maintaining the largest portion of
undeveloped lands possible.

Therefore, we support the current habitat restoration actions on
the 1766 acres of land presently only minimally developed, and urge
that no portion of those lands be apportioned for future new
development. New developement should occur in the already more
intensively developed south west corner of the proprety.

Minnesotans statewide value natural resources for their beauty and
the enjoyment they provide. Minnesotans believe that natural, open
space in the public domain enhances the quality of life for all
citizens.

Ramsey County has the highest human population density in the state
and the lowest per capita amount of natural, open space. The TCAAP
property provides a future opportunity to remedy this deficit. The
Zoological Society of Minnesota therefore encourages and supports
the eventual designation of these lands as a natural area managed
to sustain native flora and fauna and open to the public.

Thank you for providing an opportunity for the Society to express
the interest and desires of the membership.

~ ~~ U 'r,
~' "'-"7,/ - _ t-/
'-- C-'&"\A. j ~'-- <!l-U~f- "

Jo n Galli, conservation Committee chairpersol l/' _ k. i..U!; II
1126 Benton Way r--' " ."'
Arden HillS, MN. 55112 'i'; {,a]..:Y-
r,,-,
cc: Bruce Vento U
Paul Wellstone

Box 3 Rosemount, Minnesota 55068
o
CI,,"11l<lon RecycladPaoe<"
