,
,
. CITY OF ARDm mILS
MEM)RAN[)lJM
DATE: October 20, 1994
TO: Mayor and City Council
FRCM: Brian Fritsinger, Ccmmmi.ty Planning Coord:ina~
SUBJECT : MetroEast Deve10pnent Partnership
Recently, I met with Debra Barkley and Jeff Raegeth of MetroEast
Ceveloprrent Partnership (MEDP). At this meeting, we discussed the
activities of the partnership and how the firm could assist Arden
Hills.
At this meeting, MEDP requested that the City of Arden Hills pledge to
be a member for the next two years. The cost of this membership is
$1000/yr or a total of $2000.
. At the time I was hired by the City, Ms. Person and I discussed Arden
Hills potential involvement with MEDP. In fact, we had expected this
request to be made llU.lch earlier than now.
Attached you will find a copy of the organization's 1994 - 96 strategic
plan. Within this plan, it identifies most of the benefits that
membership will give Arden Hills. These seIVices range frcm business
leads to business consulting.
MEDP has been providi..'1g, at no cost to the City, these seIVices for
the past several years. In one sense, they have lJea-..n aceing in a role
similar to that des=ibed by the City Council several months ago when
they mentioned an economic developrrent oonsultant. other neightoring
cClTl11t.lIlities, such as M::lunds View, are =ently members of this
organization.
The only other economic developrrent organization that I am aware of in
this area costs between $10-15,000 per year. I believe that for the
$1000 fee the assistance provided to the City can be well justified.
A portion of tr.e Planning Consultant fees budgeted for 1995 could be
used for this membership. Staff would reccmrend that the City Council
. consider approving the MEDP Membership.
