I
I- research the impact of each scenario and bring those findings to
the next meeting. He told the committee that he envisions the final
I re-use plan to be a combination of many of the proposals before the
committee.
I Dorothy MCClung told the committee and audience that the City of
Aden Hills is holding an open house on July 27th at 6:00 PM at the
Army Reserve Center. This meeting has been advertised on the cable
. access channel and in the local newspapers.
Marsha SO\lcheray asked the committee if it would be possible to
leave the property in its current state. Ms. Levin said that this
I is probably not a realistic option, since it would be an expensive
proposal that would not generate much income. The site is currently
wholly supported by the federal government, including security,
I electricity, gas, water, and all other utilities. When the site
turns over to new owners, the City of Arden Hills will undertake
all of these functions. The site will need to be self-sufficient to
ensure that it is .not an undue strain on the surrounding
I communities.
Dennis Probst reminded the committee that the arsenal already has
I several million square feet of buildings at present, and they might
not all be subject to demolition. The arsenal is not strictly open
space today, and the "Open space" proposal would wipe out only 30-
.- 40% of the standing buildings.
Dick Wedell asked the committee if it had any reactions to the
proposals put before it. Julie Trude emphasized that the committee
I should look at market forces as a deciding factor in the final re-
use plan. One plan could potentially create more clean-up
requirements than another, which would lengthen the process. She
I asked the committee whether it would be prudent to narrow the
vision at this point, given that our elected officials need a
specific plan to proceed.
I Craig Andresen told the committee that he was pleased to see the
cirtical areas protected in the city's plans, and that he supports
something in line with the "Open Space" proposal. He has met with
I other representatives of other closed sites who indicated that in
their experience the Army listened to their recommendations. If the
state or county were to take control of the site and the commercial
I land were to be leased, Mr. Andresen said there could be adequate
revenue to leave the majority of the land as open space. He
emphasized his optimism at seeing the protection of important
I environmental sites in the other plans; however, he mentioned that
the other plans that they had presented would limit the scope of
the wildlife currently present on the site.
I The committee decided that it would revisit the land-use proposals
at the next meeting, when it has had time to review the proposals
- presented by the task force. Brain Fritsinger told the committee
I that he would distribute copies of each map at the next meeting.
I
. -
