III
~ also 12 feet although this may vary depending on the conditions. Left-turn lanes might be provided
by a continuous two-way left-turn lane as shoy,n in the three-lane urban or five-lane urban sections.
III The continuous center two-way left-turn lane is typically used in areas where there are lower speeds
and multiple access points, A second alternative is to carve out a left-turn lane in a median
III separating the through lanes: This is illustrated in the section labeled four-lane urban with single
left-turn lanes. The minimum desirable median width is 6 feet, so in areas where there is no turn lane
the median is typically 18 feet wide.. Where adequate right-of-way is available a wider median may
II be desirable to separate the paved areas and allow landscaping that would enhance the visual quality
of the roadway. This wider median might also be used to provide double left-turn lanes where there
is very large turning volumes,
II Shoulders
II A third consideration is the need for shoulders. There are a number of reasons shoulders are
desirable including the following:
II . they provide an emergency stopping area for disabled vehicles;
. they provide an escape area to avoidan accident;
II
. they provide area for vehicles to slow and make turns out of the through lanes;
Ie
. they provide for drier through lanes during heavy rains;
I . they provide an area for maintenance operations and snow storage; and
. they provide additional separation between traffic in the through lanes and
I obstructions or people adjacent to the highway.
Shoulders also improve the safety of the highway for many of the reasons listed above. A desirable
I shoulder width is 10 feet. The sections show8 feet plus the 2 foot curb and gutter. Shoulders are
not mandatory but are highly desirable. Narrower shoulders would be better than no shoulders since
I they allow vehicles to at least get partially out the through -lanes.
Drainal!e Provisions
. .'
There are two ways to handle drainage on an arterial street. One option is to provide drainage
ditches similar to what is currently provided on the existing highway. Drainage ditches require
. approximately 40 feet adjacent to both sides of the roadway. A second option is to provide curb and
gutter with an underground storm drainage system to convey the water to selected outlets or ponds.
The underground storm drainage pipes can be placed under the roadway or under the boulevard. The
. standard width for the curb and gutter in this section is two feet.
.- Boulevard Area
-,.'."
I 52
:r--
