IiII1 <br /> Many of these strategies involve actions that fall on the affected Cities to implement. These - <br /> I programs are generally oriented towards work trips and focus on the place of employment. Some - <br /> strategies are more effective than others in reducing trips. The chart on the following page shows <br /> the effectiveness of different strategies on reducing the vehicle trips at an office or other employment - <br /> I oriented land use. The most effective strategies are strategies that reduce the costs of transit or car ~, <br /> pooling or increase the cost for single occupant vehicles. <br /> - <br /> I In order for these strategies to be effective in reducing demand in a corridor or region they generally '""'- <br /> need to be mandatory and as inclusive as possible. Studies in the 1-494 corridor found that programs -, <br /> I that are voluntary were only half as effective at reducing vehicle trips as mandatory programs. The <br /> study also found that it was necessary to include existing land uses as well as new development in .. <br /> order to be effective. The 1-494 studies found that an extremely aggressive travel demand - <br /> I managment program that included employee parking charges, additional transit subsidies, HOV -, <br /> lanes, aggressive employer ridesharing programs, and alternative work arrangements that was <br /> mandatory for all employers would reduce travel demand on 1-494 by about II percent.
