I
:- CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
MEMORANDUM
DATE: November 21, 1995
I TO: Brian Fritsinger, City Administrator tI
I FROM: Cindy S. Walsh, Parks & Recreation Director C;;;
I SUBJECT: Tony Schmidt Park Resolution 95-79
Background
I The Parks & Recreation Committee invited Greg Mack, Ramsey County Parks & Recreation
Director, and Mark Nolan, Commission Chair, to their September 26, 1995 meeting. The
Committee wanted to relay concerns about the condition of Tony Schmidt Park as well as some
I of the activities that occur in the park. Since most ofthe Committee members do not live around
the park, they invited a few residents to attend and share their concerns.
I Greg Mack presented the preliminary plans to redevelop Tony Schmidt Park in phases beginning
with the beach area. Because of the increase in unwanted activity that occurs there, concerns
II were expressed from myself, the Committee and residents that the park area up on the hill is in
need of redevelopment before the beach area. We were all curious how park improvements were
prioritized within the Ramsey County budgeting process. Tony Schmidt Park is in need of
I redevelopment, but never seems to be a high enough priority to get funded. A number of people
expressed displeasure with the fact that recently Shoreview has had two Ramsey County Parks
redeveloped and Arden Hills hasn't had any. Mr. Mack and Mr. Nolan explained that parks are
I prioritized according to need. The priorities for 1996 have been set and Tony Schmidt is not a
priority to be funded. It will be a possible priority for 1997.
I Recommendation
The Committee stressed the need to have Tony Schmidt be a priority for funding in 1997. By
I passing resolution 95-79 the City Council will be showing their support for Tony Schmidt Park
to be a Ramsey County priority in 1997.
I CS\V\jt
I
I
.-
---..
I
