ARDEN HILLS CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION—MAY 28, 2024 9
Councilmember Fabel suggested the City install its own pickleball nets given the growing
interest in pickleball.
Mr. Shearen stated Arden Oaks had a great opportunity for pickleball, but stated the Council
may want to consider how the noise from this activity would adversely impact the neighborhood.
He explained Freeway Park may be the better option for pickleball inside the hockey rink but
stated it would cost approximately$300,000 to pour concrete.
Councilmember Monson discussed how the City had small neighborhood parks, along with
larger community parks. She commented on how Arden Hills was isolated due to the major
freeways that cut through the City, noting this made connections to parks difficult.
Mr. Shearen further reviewed the improvement recommendations for Freeway and Arden Oaks
Parks.
Assistant Public Works Director Miller requested questions or comments from the Council on
how to proceed.
Councilmember Rousseau indicated she wanted to see different equipment used within both
parks since they were walkable. She suggested a tower be installed at Arden Oaks Park and a
ropes course or natural playground at Freeway Park. She understood swings were still favorable
and should be installed at one of the parks.
Councilmember Monson agreed with this suggestion. She recommended Arden Oaks Park have
a restroom installed. She suggested trees or a shade structure be considered and not a picnic
shelter for this park. In addition, she recommended picnic tables or benches be considered but not
both. She supported the gaga pit being installed. She recommended all of the trees be kept at
Freeway Park and that a fence be installed along the entry ramp.
Councilmember Holden understood the hardcourt was utilized for basketball and pickleball at
Freeway Park. She supported the fencing being reinstalled because this would look nicer and
would improve safety. She recommended the picnic area remain as is.
Mayor Grant believed both of these parks were heavily used. He recommended the amenities
within these parks serve a wide age range. He understood pickleball was growing in popularity
and suggested this amenity be incorporated into Freeway Park.
Councilmember Rousseau suggested the vacant space within Freeway Park be utilized for a
community garden.
Mayor Grant stated they would not be returning to the worksession after the regular meeting as a
Councilmember wouldn't be present, and he noted the remaining items would be carried over to a
future meeting.
C. Spring Lake Park Lions Donation Discussion
This item will be addressed at a future worksession.
D. Council Code of Conduct
