B Ii BUETOW 2 ARCHITECTS, INC.
PROJECT EXPLANATION
A Study in 2018 determined that a new Fire Station should be built on a new site to meet the needs of
"the next 50 years". The size should be at least 3 acres and a site of 3. 7 acres was purchased in 2020.
The Study also noted the Station should include 6 drive through bays and living/sleeping quarters. The
new Fire Station would then because of size and equipment contained would transition to become the
new Headquarters Station and include much needed training functions.
Exterior Design Concept
Overall Image from Pine Tree Drive-
The building exterior reflects the interior functions to the Public. The north half expresses the HQ office
function on the first floor and :firefighters dayroom, sleeping quarters and wellness spaces on the second
level. The south half of the building is the apparatus bays and associated functions. The north half
materials of glass and brick represent "office" and brick structural concrete wall panels on the south the
"apparatus bays".
Administrative Offices Entry/Main Entry
A sloped cantilevered metal canopy visually announces that this is the Public entrance to the facility. It
is adjacent the Memorial Entry Plaza and Flag display. As one enters the public parking area from Pine
Tree Drive after passing the monument sign, the entry is very visible as the sculptural canopy reaches
out toward the parking.
LJFD Headquarters
The ftmction of offices is reinforced by the glass that wraps the northeast building comer around the
offices on the inside. This glass feature is repeated at the set back second floor. Both levels include a
horizontal aluminum sunscreen as the design utilizes many "Green Building" sustainable design
features. The second level canopy over the exterior deck space is similar to the main entry canopy. The
Fire Chiefs' vehicles garage adjacent the offices frames the transition between office and apparatus
bays.
Apparatus Bays and Training Area
The south half of the building is brick structural insulated wall panels. The large bi-folding doors of the
apparatus bays are the predominant feature. Above each vehicle exit door will be a clerestory window.
The projecting clad tower fonn in the middle of the doors will be the backdrop for the LJFD logo
emblem . Behind this projected piece inside the building are the associated spaces for firefighting and
training.
Floor Plan Design Concept
Circulation Spine-First Level
Upon entering the LJFD Headquarters lobby a corridor organizes the first floor ending in the access to
the apparatus bays. The administrative offices are to the east and Training, fire/watch room and
associated rooms to the west. The six drive through bays are bisected by the firefighting spaces such as
tum out gear and training spaces. The multi-level training areas with props are the build out on the west
side of the building.
Circulation Spine-Second Level
Similar to the first level, the second floor has a hall with a stair at each end and elevator centrally
located. An efficient loop off of this spine accesses the sleeping rooms.
Training Space
The training spaces are multi-level and are vertically connected by the hose/training tower.
BUETOW 2 ARCHITECTS, INC.
