ARDEN HILLS REGULAR CITY COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES
JULY 28, 2003

15

.

Councilmember Rem noted it was important for the City to take a stand on this
Issue.

Mr. Filla stated this motion was only expressing the City's wishes and was not
enforcing or banning guns and other weapons.

Councilmember Holden stated she would be voting against this because the
Legislature gave the residents the right to carry guns and gave no rights to the
cities and counties. She suggested if people had a concern, they needed to write to
their Legislators expressing opposition. She stated she did not have a concern for
her safety while in City Hall.

Councilmember Larson stated the signs were going to be everywhere banning
guns and he was not saying they were going to ban guns and other weapons, only
that it was the City's preference that they not be brought into City Hall.

Mayor Aplikowski stated she had a concern about the phrase other weapons
. being on the sign. She asked what other weapons consisted of.

Councilmember Larson stated he would revise his Motion to state that Guns
were not welcome at City Hall.

Councilmember Rem indicated she accepted the revision.

Councilmember Grant asked what was a prominent location and how large the
sign would be.

Councilmember Larson replied he would leave this up to staff.

Ms. Young stated she had seen a sign recently that was simply an 8"x 11" format
placed in a plastic sleeve stating "Guns were not welcome at City Hall" posted
near the handle of a main entrance door.

Mayor Aplikowski stated she would now support the motion with the "other
weapons" clause being removed.

.

The motion carried (3-2) Councilmembers Grant and
Holden
