FLORAL PARK VOLUNTEER PROJECTS 2025 2 • Thin out Cup Flower plants • Define natural garden border (currently 3- to 4-inch-wide shallow chip or mulch filled trench) • Rake off leaves and take to compost pile. • Tools: rake, lopper, hand lopper, spade , shears. Garden #4 (milkweed and compost), spring/summer: • Turn over compost (spade) • Remove brush pile (lopper, saw) • Pull/cut buckthorn saplings. o Requires a sturdy lopper and/or the brush puller. • Plant ferns o Tools: rake and spade Garden #5 (fern garden, early spring): • Pull/cut buckthorn saplings. • Crab apple tree. Inspect and trim if necessary. Area beneath tree should be clear and free of buck thorn, burdock and wild raspberries. Trimming best done before last threat of frost to minimize insect threat to new trimming wounds on tree. o Tools: lopper and/or the brush puller, spade, ladder. Garden #6 (Siberian Iris), early spring/summer: • Clear off leaves. Take to compost pile. • Define natural garden border (currently 3- to 4-inch-wide shallow chip or mulch filled trench) • Plant more iris. Mulch and fertilize. • Tools: sturdy rake, spade, edger. Garden #7 (orange daylilies), spring/summer: • Remove wild raspberries. Pull/cut. o Tools: sturdy leather gloves, hand lopper. • Mulch and fertilize Garden #8: Clear more space for wild sunflowers. Garden #9, Fern alley (daylilies and ferns): • Clear and mulch around daylilies and ferns. • Move large rocks back onto park land at beginning of ferns as landscaping feature (mound of rock) (off new grass area). Rocks were moved from decorative position to off park land for park renovation. o Tools: small canvas tarp (to hold and drag stones) Garden #10: • Plant 6 native tall grasses (big and little bluestem, prairie dropseed, switchgrass) around sign. o Three around each post. o Tools: spade, gloves, mulch, fertilizer.
