FLORAL PARK VOLUNTEER PROJECTS 2025 <br /> <br />2 <br /> <br />• Thin out Cup Flower plants <br />• Define natural garden border (currently 3- to 4-inch-wide shallow chip or mulch filled trench) <br />• Rake off leaves and take to compost pile. <br />• Tools: rake, lopper, hand lopper, spade , shears. <br />Garden #4 (milkweed and compost), spring/summer: <br />• Turn over compost (spade) <br />• Remove brush pile (lopper, saw) <br />• Pull/cut buckthorn saplings. <br />o Requires a sturdy lopper and/or the brush puller. <br />• Plant ferns <br />o Tools: rake and spade <br />Garden #5 (fern garden, early spring): <br />• Pull/cut buckthorn saplings. <br />• Crab apple tree. Inspect and trim if necessary. Area beneath tree should be clear and free of <br />buck thorn, burdock and wild raspberries. Trimming best done before last threat of frost to <br />minimize insect threat to new trimming wounds on tree. <br />o Tools: lopper and/or the brush puller, spade, ladder. <br />Garden #6 (Siberian Iris), early spring/summer: <br />• Clear off leaves. Mulch and fertilize. <br />• Tools: sturdy rake, spade, edger. <br />Garden #7 (orange daylilies), spring/summer: <br />• Remove wild raspberries. Pull/cut. <br />o Tools: sturdy leather gloves, hand lopper. <br />• Mulch and fertilize <br />Garden #8: Clear more space for wild sunflowers. <br />Garden #9, Fern alley (daylilies and ferns): <br />• Clear and mulch around daylilies and ferns. <br />• Move large rocks back onto park land at beginning of ferns as landscaping feature (mound of <br />rock) (off new grass area). Rocks were moved from decorative position to off park land for park <br />renovation. <br />o Tools: small canvas tarp (to hold and drag stones) <br />Garden #10: <br />• Plant 6 native tall grasses (big and little bluestem, prairie dropseed, switchgrass) around sign. <br />o Three around each post. <br />o Tools: spade, gloves, mulch, fertilizer.
