FLORAL PARK VOLUNTEER PROJECTS 2025 <br /> <br />4 <br /> <br /> <br />Trail maintenance – <br />• add chips to wet sections of trail, <br />• Trail widening by cutting brush to width of three feet, <br />• Pull brush and buckthorn using spade and brush puller. <br />• Tools: gloves, spade, fork, lopper, brush puller, tree girdling tool. <br /> <br />Winter <br />Wood duck nesting boxes (5) – November -January: Clean, repair, and re-chip. Box on Colleen/Hamline <br />Pond done best in January or early February while pond is frozen. Access is from Hamline or by pond <br />overflow egress. Home owner has granted access over his land from Colleen. <br />• Box #1: Bridge box <br />• Box #2: Swamp box Trailhead #3 <br />• Box #3: Swamp box by Hamline Trail is serviced by Trista Yont. <br />• Box #4: Pond box in Colleen/Hamline Pond <br />• Box #5: Oak box hung in tree 10 yards to east of Trista’s box. Not currently serviced. <br />Buckthorn Removal Project (park at-large) <br />• seed collecting – pull seed pods off stalks into paper grocery bags. <br />• Buckthorn/brush cutting and removal best done during winter months due to spring wood ticks. <br />• After ground freezes, cut or girdle. <br />• Cut saplings and small trees using loppers and/or small chain saws two inches from ground level . <br />• Girdle large trees and return in early summer/fall to trim suckers. (Hachette, tree girdler) <br />• Treat stumps with herbicide or leave to trim suckers in spring. Plant will eventually die if root <br />stored energy is depleted over spring and summer and not renewed by suckers. <br />Trail maintenance (park at-large): <br />• Brush pile, tree and branch removal <br />• Buckthorn removal (invasive) <br />• Burdock removal (invasive): collect seed pods. <br />• Garlic Mustard removal (invasive) <br />• Repaint trailhead signs (yellow) <br />• Numbered trailheads from the south of the Woodland Trail starting with the <br />o South Trailhead off Floral Park Drive, TH #1; <br />o Bridge Trailhead, TH #2; <br />o Middle Trailhead, TH #3; <br />o Garden Trailhead behind garden #1, TH #4; <br />o Ballfield Trailhead, TH #5; <br />o Hamline Trailhead North, TH #6). <br />
