Water Distribution System Hydraulic Model Calibration and System Evaluation Report <br /> Chapter 2 – Existing Water Distribution System <br /> December 2019 <br /> <br /> <br />P05049-2019-000 Page 5 <br /> <br />2.1.2 Hydrants and Valves <br />There are about 560 fire hydrants used for fire protection in the Arden Hills water distribution <br />system. The fire hydrants are located in key locations to provide access for firefighting around <br />the City. The number of fire hydrants presented in this report is representative of infrastructure <br />included as information provided by Arden Hills but may not include all private hydrants. <br />The most common valve type in the distribution system is an isolation valve. Isolation valves <br />can be closed to block the flow of water from one pipe to another pipe. The isolation valves <br />allow the ability to isolate a small portion of the water distribution system, so that repairs and <br />maintenance impact only a limited number of customers. Isolation valves in the Arden Hills <br />water distribution system are predominantly gate valves with some butterfly valves located on <br />large diameter water main. <br />2.1.3 Distribution Storage Facilities <br />The Arden Hills water distribution system has total finished water storage volume of 1.5 MG <br />in two storage facilities that provide operational storage to meet the system demands, provide <br />emergency storage, provide fire flow storage, and help maintain a uniform pressure in the <br />distribution system during peak hourly demands. Also, the 1.5 MG Roseville water tower can <br />be used to serve Arden Hills in the case of an emergency.
