,

.

need the. tax base, so we did add a few problems, which has really
culminated into one big problem at Hamline and Floral Drive. .
A problem so serious that someone is going to get killed some-
day if we don't get the traffic light. We've already had, I.
think, three accidents that were maybe before your time on the
Council, but the people that live on that street know. When
the people built on Colleen in that area, I feel very bad for
them because they have a serious problem also. But they do
have three exits to go through. I realize this is inconvenient
to go through this exit and through McClung and through Colleen,
but you all know, to get on the freeway, what we have to go
through to get on Hamline to get to 694 going north. It is a
problem to exit. So they already have three exits. We have
one. Their properties aren't all developed yet. They have
some of the property developed, but their problem isn't as
serious as it's going to be. It will get more serious. We
have all of our property developed and we can't really face any
more serious of a problem in that area. I don't see how, in
good judgment - and we're projecting this traffic, we don't
even know what it is - we know we have a serious problem now
and we're just saying it's going to become more serious. I
don't see how they could even possibly consider running that
through to Floral Drive. Not because it's going to hurt us -
I live there, I don't mind that. I understand that you have to
do some things. I think you have to consider the fact that we
can't get out now on Hamline. The people on Colleen -they
have a problem - but at least they have two other ways to go.
They can go out and turn right on 96. We can't do that. When
those cars come whistling down Hamline, remember - Hamline and
Floral Drive are just less than a half a block when the freeway
splits - you know, when it comes together - and boy, I tell
you, they come shooting down there like race cars. It's a
problem if you have two or three people waiting to get out.
Believe me, you start taking unnecessary chances to get out of
there because you have to almost come to a running stop at the
corner to make it out. In the winter time it's even worse.
If you consider putting that street through here somehow to get
onto Floral Drive, I think along with the consideration you
have to put a semaphore there. I don't think there's another
way. I think it will be until somebody gets krlled and then
it will be too late. The other alternative is to not put it
through at all, which I think, at this time, possibly makes
more sense. It costs' a lot of money and who is it really going
to benefit? We've had sporadic meetings with the Council and
we try to come to them all and we really don't get a full pic-
ture. Do we really need it? Is it absolutely necessary? Is
it going to save lives to do that or is it going to take lives?
I think that's really important. I just wish that you would
consider - I know you're not going to vote tonight, but if
there are 40 people who live in this area and all 40 people
ask you not to put that through, would that make a difference?
We're the ones that are going to be affected, we're the ones
that live there. These people that moved in, moved in later.
They had no more idea than the man in the moon that this road
was ever going to come through until Marcel asked for that

.

11
