Parks, Trails & Recreation Committee – July 15, 2025 Page 14

Committee Member Seemann spoke to one of the leads for recruiting volunteers at Boston
Scientific. They said they could commit to one or two projects at Cummings. They have so many
different projects for their staff to choose from that they can’t commit to adopting a park.

Parks and Recreation Manager Skalicky said one of the pros of the Adopt-A-Park/Adopt-A-
Spot program is making it a big or small of a volunteer effort as the adopter would like. There will
be opportunities for volunteers to work a single day on a specific spot.

Council Liaison Rousseau said it sounds like there is a lot of work before those plantings can go
into Cummings. She wondered if Chatham could be a second option.

Parks and Recreation Manager Skalicky said the Public Works Superintendent has told her that
any planting in a park, needs to be a part of the Parks Maintenance Plan, for that year.

Council Liaison Rousseau said this Park Maintenance Plan process seem relatively new. She
wondered if there is room to request this second spraying. That seems like an item that may be
able to be done.

Parks and Recreation Manager Skalicky said the second spraying can definitely be done.

Committee Member Jacobson sought clarification that the recommendation is that these plants
will be used at Chatham.

Council Liaison Rousseau said Committee Member Seemann is recommending Cummings.

Committee Member Jacobson said there are problems with approval to work on that area.

Committee Member Seemann said some of those plants are suitable for either Cummings or
Chatham. She was planning to distribute the plants to both parks.

Committee Member Olson said the PTRC was not aware that Cummings takedown was
happening. If we had known that was planned, we could have made the proper recommendation.
She doesn’t understand why we would take out everything, knowing that a bunch of weeds will
immediately fill that space. Her other concern is we have residents and volunteers who are excited
to do something for our City. To tell them no, diminishes that excitement. If we have the resources
and have put a ton of work into planning and preparing to then be told no, is disappointing. The
PTRC learned everything was removed from other people. We knew about the trees in Floral
coming down for months. We were never told that Cummings was going to pretty much be wiped
out.

D.
