PETITION
• We the undersigned residents of the city of Arden Hills, hereby petition the
Arden Hills City Council to authorize the placement of"no parking during
school hours" street signs on the portion of Chatham Avenue adjacent to the
Valentine Hills School property for the following reasons:
1. We are concerned for the safety of the children.
Cars parked on the portion of Chatham Avenue adjacent to school
property present a safety hazard to the children attending Valentine Hills
School by hindering visibility for the children who walk to and from
school.
2. During the start of school hours, the parked cars contribute to unsafe
traffic congestion. Parents are forced to stop adjacent to the parked cars
when dropping children off at school. This not only creates a traffic
safety concern for the other vehicular traffic on Chatham Avenue, it
forces young children to maneuver between parked and idling cars to
reach school property.
• 3. Parking cars on both side of the street in the aforementioned area
continues to cause unsafe traffic congestion throughout the school day by
forcing traffic to one lane only. The safety concern is exacerbated by
already compromised visibility from the curving hill on this part of
Chatham Avenue.
4. Allowing cars to park on the aforementioned area of Chatham Avenue
undermines the school's safety policy that requires school visitors to enter
through the front doors of the school building, and instead encourages
access to the school through the back doors of the building.
5. There are ample parking spaces in the large, east parking lot of the school
to accommodate school personnel and visitor parking needs. Therefore,
parking on the aforementioned area is an unnecessary hazard for the
children, residents and motorists on Chatham Avenue.
•
