.- <<
CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
. MEMORANDUM
DATE: January 12, 1996
TO: Brian Fritsinger, City Administrator
FROM: Dwayne Stafford, Public Works Superintenden
SUBJECT: Water System Modifications
Back!!round:
The City of Arden Hills currently has two water towers, our south tower, a one million gallon
tower south ofInterstate 694 on Red Fox Road and our north tower which is north ofInterstate
694 on Fernwood Avenue. The Arden Hills south water tower is filled by Roseville pumps when
water level sensors instruct the pumps to come on, The Arden Hills north tower is filled by
- Arden Hills booster station pumps, when instructed, which draw water from the same lines that
fill our south tower. Up until this past summer the City had never been able to completely fill
the south tower.
-
During the past summer while Roseville was painting its water tower, Arden Hills opened by-
. pass valves between Roseville's system and Arden Hills's system, allowing un-metered water to
. flow back and forth between the cities. Thus, enabling Roseville to share our south water tower.
Working with Barney Brion from Roseville Public Works Department and implementing the
- following ideas, staff was able to overflow the south tower and keep it full of water all summer.
1. The pressure regulating valve between north and south sides of the City was found to be
- defective and was then closed. This problem alone could account for 2 to 3 pounds of
pressure loss, which would translate to 4 to 7 feet in tank water elevation. The valve has
since been modified, by Arden Hills Public Works staff to work only manually.
-
2. There are two (2) 12 inch and one (1) 16 inch feeder lines from Roseville serving Arden
- Hills. All of these feeder lines are reduced down to 8 inch meters at Arden Hills three (3)
metering stations. The by-pass valves were opened all summer allowing water to enter
- the City, unrestricted by meters.
-
, Obsolete and unreliable telemetry to Roseville has since been upgraded to a state of the
-'.
-
art system.
-
-
--
- - .
-
-
-
