I' ,
,
Ie CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
I MEMORANDUM
I DATE: March 12, 1996
TO: Brian Fritsinger, City Administrator
I FROM: Dwayne Stafford, Public Works Superintendent
I SUBJECT: Installation of Unfinished Watcrmain on Old Highway 10
I Background
One segment ofwatermain on Old Highway 10 has never been constructed. This is in the area
south of Highway 96 running along the west shoulder to just north of Wedge wood Circle. This
I segment, would complete a natural loop of the entire Round Lake area and provide water service
to the adjacent property, plus it would make a simple task of isolating this area from the areas
east of the freeway (New and Old Highway 10). Enclosed is a drawing of the referenced area.
I Old Hi~hway 10 Overlay
As discussed in previous memos, the Ramsey County Public Works Department plans to overlay
.. Old Highway 10 between County Road F and Highway 96 this coming summer. Being
considered are paved shoulders and a trail on the western shoulder of the Old Highway. The
replacement of the six (6) inch watermain between County Road F and Valentine earlier
I identified as needing replacement, is also being considered. This watermain would lay under the
new shoulders.
I Recommendation
Staff recommends consideration by Council to complete the unfinished segment ofa 12 inch
I watermain and install six (6) hydrants and residential service lines to the approximately 20
homes along this segment.
I Costs
Staff has estimated the costs of this 12 inch line, including 20 house services, six (6) fire
hydrants and necessary fittings and valves to be $76,500. This includes $58,500 for materials
I and $18,000 for labor and equipment.
If the main line was reduced to eight (8) inches, a savings of $15,000 would be made to bring the
I total cost down to an estimated $61,500. Stafffeels an eight (8) inch line would be adequate,
however, they have not discussed this project with the City Engineer. Engineering costs have not
been included in staffs estimate.
I
,.
I
