I
I. CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
MEMORANDUM
I ' DATE: May 9, 1996
I TO: Mayor and City Council
I FROM: Brian Fritsinger, City Administrator @)
SUBJECT: Resolution No. 96-30, Supporting 35W Corridor Coalition
I
I Background
Over the past few months, City Staff has been meeting with representatives of the cities of
Shoreview, New Brighton, Mounds View and Roseville. The purpose of these meetings was to
I discuss issues which affect each community and consider alternatives for creating a strategic
alliance to address these issues,
I Initially, representatives from these cities were meeting to discuss approaches of collaboration
for the marketing and development of the corridor cities. These issues related to transportation,
housing, polluted site clean up, infrastructure improvements, and commercial/industrial
.. development. Other topics discussed have included GIS, lobbying, financial assistance and
CDBG funding. It has become obvious that over time, the coalition may expand these issues and
discuss a broader base of topics,
I There is no specific structure to the coalition at this time. Participation at meetings has included
a variety of municipal staff It is expected that the next meeting of the coalition, scheduled for
I later this month, will include the Mayors from each participating community. The makeup of the
coalition is also flexible enough to include other corridor cities, should they desire to participate
I (i.e, Blaine, Lino Lakes).
At this time, there is no financial commitment to participate in the coalition. Staff believes the
I benefit to participating in the coalition is the strength in numbers it provides. The ability to
jointly pursue funding or other projects is greatly enhanced through the number of cities
involved.
I Recommendation
Staff recommends adoption of Resolution No, 96-30, Supporting the Cooperative Participation in
I the North Metro 35W Corridor Coalition.
I
,
I
