t:' '. ._ lP I I
I' ~l--J-irtoL7 1//,-/
I INTRODUCTION
__he Bethel College and Seminary Campus has been guided in Its growth by a series of thoughtful,. practical, yet Inspired
urators. From 1953 to the present, Campus Presidents to Campus Planners have strived to shepherd expansion with
1 vision and quality and respect for the natural landscape. Even so, enrollment has often excc"d"d the capability of the
facility to accommodate it. Long range plans which included fiexlbility and growth have been built out. Existing spaces
have been used and re-used with frugality. The goal of this plan is to identify future facility needs of the Institution and
I provide a template for growth and change on the Campus that is in keeping with the vision and mission upheld so
unrelentingiy over time.
The Campus Masterplan at Bethel College and Seminary has been guided by several ccncepts.
I First, is a sense of preservation and stewardship of the environment. It will be important to maintain the beauty of the
natural landscape even while expanding the built environment. The lakeside has begun to be integrated into the campus
1 experience with the opening of the Community Life Center, an idea which will be further enhanced with future expansion.
The use of natural light, the incorporation of natural topography, and the relationship of the Campus to the environment
and the natural landscape continue to be valued principles In all future campus development.
I The existing clusters of buildings have been built thoughtfully. Both the Seminary and the College campuses are
composed of building modules surrounded by natural light (afforded by exterior landscaped zones) and linked one to the
next by enclosed passageways. The seccnd guiding ccncept is to use this pattem to tink the two campuses to form a
I COhesive village rather than an urban sprawl. The integrity of these earlier master plans will be maintained. The quality
and detailing of building materials shall maintain and often surpass the standards set with earlier buildings.
The campus is very pedestrian friendly in that the car is relegated to the perimeter. This third concept will provide the
1 basis for future development of parking areas, a ring road, Kresge Court, and for the construction of a pedestrian .mall.
in place of a segment of the Bethel Drive. The vision of the early planners to make Bethel pleasant and pastoral for
pedestrians will be expanded and enhanced.
..
1
1
I
I
I
I
1
~ge10f1
I
